{"id":244,"date":"2008-06-25T09:13:00","date_gmt":"2008-06-25T16:13:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/coffeejitters.net\/blog\/?p=244"},"modified":"2014-07-04T22:34:02","modified_gmt":"2014-07-05T05:34:02","slug":"gas-works-park","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/coffeejitters.net\/blog\/2008\/06\/25\/gas-works-park\/","title":{"rendered":"Gas Works Park"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Jutting 400 feet into Lake Union and offering a spectacular view of Downtown as well as the Queen Anne and Eastlake neighborhoods, Seattle&#8217;s Gas Works Park is one of the city&#8217;s most unique landmarks.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/coffeejitters\/2609079981\/\" title=\"062 by coffeejitters, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3020\/2609079981_c53d9e1674.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"062\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Seattle Gas Light Company converted coal to gas from 1906 to 1937 and oil to gas from 1937 to 1956.  Gas production ended in 1956; the City of Seattle bought the property for use as a park in 1962 and Gas Works Park opened to the public in 1975.  The architect retained many of the old structures in the park; some are off limits, cordoned off behind chain link fences, others were painted bright colors and included in the children&#8217;s play area.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/coffeejitters\/2609080897\/\" title=\"082 by coffeejitters, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3253\/2609080897_e46d800f52.jpg?resize=375%2C500\" alt=\"082\" height=\"500\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>You might recognize Gas Works Park from the movies <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/6305283516?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=honeymooning-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=6305283516\">Singles<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/product\/B00000K31Q?ie=UTF8&amp;tag=honeymooning-20&amp;linkCode=as2&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;creativeASIN=B00000K31Q\">10 Things I Hate About You<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/coffeejitters\/2609079717\/\" title=\"055 by coffeejitters, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3037\/2609079717_93b96312dd.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"055\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There were several concerted cleanup projects to remove benzene and other contaminants from the soil and groundwater.  Tar still bubbles up every once in a while.  The park is monitored closely for contamination but it is considered clean enough for public use.<\/p>\n<p>Just don&#8217;t eat the dirt.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/coffeejitters\/2609912618\/\" title=\"089 by coffeejitters, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm4.static.flickr.com\/3007\/2609912618_37cc866f42.jpg?resize=500%2C375\" alt=\"089\" height=\"375\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The property is now a monstrous bird condominium and a favorite target of taggers. It has been the site of numerous weddings and a gathering place for rallys and watching fireworks.<\/p>\n<p>Its also a favorite spot for Seattlites to picnic.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/coffeejitters\/2609910334\/\" title=\"043 by coffeejitters, on Flickr\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/farm3.static.flickr.com\/2068\/2609910334_f24c5e4f01.jpg?resize=375%2C500\" alt=\"043\" height=\"500\" width=\"375\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The man made hill is made from rubble and top soil and is topped with a sundial.
